King Snake

A note from resident Lynn Buhaug:

"Just to let people know.  I was driving down Kiva Place this morning and there was a very large King Snake laying across the road.  I made a point not to run over it.  If you see these snakes, feel very fortunate.   They have large white and black bands down their body.  They are called the King Snake because they eat so many other snakes.   Their favorite is the Rattle Snake.  You can google a video and as they say in the the Video feel fortunate if you have one on your land and by all means treat it with kindness."

Rattlesnakes

Rattlesnakes have been seen throughout Paa-Ko.  A Mojave Rattlesnake - the most venomous of rattlesnakes - was identified on Broken Arrow.

Please exercise extreme caution and alertness when outside in your yard.  They are very hard to spot when nestled among rocks and trees and pine needles.  Take extra caution with pets and kids.

Emergency Preparedness

Attached are the Emergency Preparedness forms, filled with valuable information about what to do in case of an emergency situation.  Things like evacuation routes from Paa-Ko (depending on the wind direction, that could be to Santa Fe or the Edgewood Walmart, or some other designated location), making and practicing an evacuation plan from your home with all your family members, what to do for pet evacuations, have important documents in one place to grab quickly and take with you, be sure to have medications for your family and pets - a 5-7 day supply is recommended, and many other things were discusssed.

For more detailed information, go to the East Mountain Interagency Fire Protection Association (EMIFPA) at EMIFPA

To receive emergency alerts on your cell phone, you may sign up at   NIXLE

Attached are the brochures (or parts of brochures) that were handed out at the meeting.  Go to READ MORE and then to DOCUMENTS

Bears

Spring time will once again bring the bears to our area looking for food.  Because of the severe lack of moisture we have had over the winter - and the forecast not looking very hopeful for any -- water has dried up and vegetation growth is limited.  Bears - and other wildlife - will be fervently looking for food and drink.

Please remember  -- don't leave an open invitation around your house to attract them.  Keep pet food inside, clean your grill after each use, take your bird feeders each night, and keep your garbage can inside the garage until trash day, or, if that is not possible, get a bear-proof can. -- bungee cords and rocks on the lid do not deter a very hungry animal.

A Surprise Sighting for This Time of Year

A resident reports that his son was walking their dog on Kiva Place this week, when about halfway up the hill, he thought he saw a trash can tipped over.  As he got closer, the dog began to bark, and the "trash can" moved!  It was a BEAR!  They are supposed to be in their hibernating status.  While bears in our area only go into a modified form of hibernation (called a state of torpor, which normally occurs between mid-October through the end of March)), it is fairly unusual to see them down this low this early.  Our winter has been, basically, non-existent this year with very mild temperatures.

Please be aware of the possibility of running coming across bears - stay alert and be cautious.
